The ACC special excursion to England
June 14-21, 2016
ACC international travel opportunities always provide a wonderful experience to learn from the experts, see fabulous public and private collections, and make new friends. The trip to England last June was no exception. Our group joined Patricia Halfpenny, English ceramics expert and Curator Emerita of Ceramics and Glass at Winterthur Museum, on a week-long tour to Staffordshire and London.
We met private collectors of pottery and porcelain – mostly from British manufacturers but also from Continental and Far Eastern makers – who led study sessions in their homes.
Highlights of the trip included handling sessions of reserve collections at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
We learned about traditional processes of production with experts at Burleigh, the oldest working Victorian pottery, and the Gladstone Pottery Museum.
And our group enjoyed a special tour and demonstration at the Spode Visitor Center, with a wine and cheese reception hosted by Paul Wood, former Managing Director of Royal Worcester Spode and now Chairman of the Spode Trust. The year 2016 was the 200th Anniversary of the 'Blue Italian' pattern and there was a special exhibition in the newly-opened galleries.
Equally special was our tour of the galleries and archives at the Wedgwood Museum and a special look at the recently expanded manufacturing facility for high-end wares.
